THE FASTEST NETWORK JUST GOT EVEN FASTER
Double speed 4GEE is already available in 20 towns and cities.
With double speed 4GEE (up to 60Mbps), a film from the EE Film Store can now take just three minutes to download instead of 20 minutes on 3G.
Double speed 4GEE has reached millions of people in:
Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield, Southampton, Sunderland, Sutton Coldfield, Walsall, West Bromwich and Wolverhampton.
And the regular 4GEE network now covers nearly 70% of the population.
We're rolling out a new enhancement to our 4G network so average speeds will be twice as fast as today – 24-30Mb/second. And top speeds are up to 60Mb/second.
Upload speeds will also be doubled to 11Mb/second. We can do this because we have sufficient portions of 1800 spectrum to upgrade our customers to 2 x 20 MHz from the current 2 x 10 MHz they use today. It's like adding two additional lanes of traffic to a road and changing the speed limit, meaning you can get more cars travelling on it, at faster speeds.
Who can use double speed 4GEE?
On pay monthly, you can get double speed 4GEE, double the data and a host of other benefits for just £3 more than our standard plans.
On pay as you go, you can get 1GB of data for just £10. But for just £5 more you can get 2GB of data plus access to double speed 4GEE.
If you have a 4G ready device, you do not need to do anything. Your phone will support our double speed 4GEE technology when available. There is no need to upgrade your device. There is no need to change any device settings. Our 4GEE service – including the double speed capability – is compatible with all existing 4G smartphones, tablets and dongles available on EE, including the range of Apple devices (iPhone 5, iPad with Retina display and iPad mini) that are only currently available on 4GEE with EE.
How is this different to 4GEE and how will I know?
Double speed 4GEE delivers even faster speeds than our standard 4GEE - raising the average 4GEE speed experienced to 24-30Mb/second, and offering peaks as high as 60Mb/second.
The doubling of speeds is enabled by the final stage of integration and optimisation of the EE network.
There will be no different network indicator on your phone. It will continue to display 4G or LTE whenever you are connected to 4GEE. Also, as more and more people sign up to 4G services, 4GEE from EE will always have the capacity to deliver superfast speeds – even on busy cell sites at peak times. Because we now own the most spectrum in the UK, we are the only operator that will be able to meet ever-growing demand and always deliver a superfast service.
Are average and upload speeds really doubling?
Yes. The current average download speed of our network is 12-15Mb/second, and that’s what we commit to in our advertising. The average speeds being delivered by this new capability are in the region of 24-30Mb/second, and customers will see peaks speeds as high as 60Mb/second.
And yes – upload speeds are increasing from 5-6 Mb/second to 11Mb/second.
Will I use more data when I'm using double speed 4GEE?
No, the same amount of content, received at the same quality, doesn't use more data on double speed 4GEE.
What’s the benefit of the extra speed?
Well, simply put, downloading films and large files and doing other great things on the internet take half the time!
Fastest network: Based on our 4G network (average speeds 12-15Mbps: EE test data 2013) being faster than 3G (1.5 Mbps UK average speed for 3G: most recent Ofcom speed survey). Double 4GEE speeds: Selected 4G areas only. Rolling out from summer 2013. Initially that will be most, but not all, 4G enabled areas of Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield. See if you could get double 4GEE speeds at ee.co.uk/coverage. Double speeds based on EE test data 2013 (average speeds doubled from 12-15Mbps to 24-30Mbps) and doubling 4G network capacity from 2 x 10MHz to 2x 20MHz. Speeds referred to are download speeds. Just how fast your 4G will be depends on a couple of things: where you are and how many other people are using 4G too. Minimum device requirements apply.
Faster than fibre broadband: based on 4G speeds of up to 60Mpbs (source: EE test data 2013) compared to average superfast fibre speed of 44.6Mbps (source: most recent Ofcom fixed line speed survey). Double data: 24 month 4GEE phone plans only. Excludes: SIM only, Plans with Roaming, mobile broadband and 12 month plans.
